Keep Medi-Cal
Medi-Cal eligibility is based mainly on income. Once you apply, HSA will help determine whether you qualify for Medi-Cal or other affordable healthcare options. Learn more about your eligibility using the BenefitsCal Ask Robin chat.
Full Medi-Cal for more Californians
Effective January 1, 2024: More low-income Californians are eligible for full Medi-Cal, regardless of age, assets, or immigration status.
What's new:
- No more asset limits
Your car, house, bank accounts, retirement funds, and other assets will no longer be counted when you apply for or renew Medi-Cal coverage. If your Medi-Cal was denied, delayed, reduced, or stopped, because of your assets, we encourage you to reapply. - Full Medi-Cal for undocumented immigrants
If you have emergency Medi-Cal (also called limited or restricted scope), you don’t need to apply for full Medi-Cal. You will automatically get full coverage starting January 1, 2024.
More information for immigrants:
- Applying for Medi-Cal will not affect your immigration status.
- Using most Medi-Cal services will not affect your immigration status. The only exception to this is if you are in a nursing home or receiving long-term institutional care. Both can be considered in a public charge determination.
We help you determine your eligibility
Don't know if you qualify for Medi-Cal? Even if you don’t, we encourage you to still apply. We will evaluate you for other affordable health care options:
- Covered California: Helps qualified applicants obtain discounted health insurance from well-known companies
- The County Children’s Health Initiative Program (CCHIP): Provides affordable and comprehensive health, dental and vision insurance for children up to age 18 who don't qualify for other publicly funded insurance programs.
- Medi-Cal Access Program (MCAP): Provides healthcare to mid-income, uninsured pregnant women.
Health care for uninsured residents
You can still receive basic, affordable health care services through Healthy San Francisco. This program serves uninsured residents regardless of immigration status, employment status, or pre-existing medical conditions. Learn more about applying at healthysf.org.
