Find and hire a Provider
If you have selected a Provider who can be a friend or family member:
- You can hire them using the Electronic Services Portal (ESP) if they are an IHSS Provider already, log in to the ESP to get started.
- If they are not already an IHSS Provider, direct them to enroll as your Provider on the Become an IHSS Provider webpage.
To change your IHSS Provider:
- Call IHSS at (415)-557-6200 or your IHSS Social Worker to report the last day of service by your IHSS Provider.
- You can hire another IHSS Provider using the Electronic Services Portal.

- The Public Authority will match you with a list of Providers on its registry.
- You will interview Providers to choose the one to hire.
- Hire them using the Electronic Services Portal.

You can request Backup Provider Services (BUPS) for short-term, essential services:
- You are discharged from a hospital or another facility without home care.
- Your regular IHSS Provider is unavailable.
- You have not yet hired an IHSS Provider.
When to request backup services:
- During business hours: Call your IHSS Social Worker for a referral to the IHSS Public Authority. If you need your Social Worker's contact, call (415) 355-6700.
- After 5:30 p.m., on holidays, and weekends: Call the IHSS Public Authority (415) 243-4477.
